Reflecting on the Meaning and Purpose of Lent

Happy Sunday!

Well, at long last Ash Wednesday has arrived. We have a full slate of Masses and Liturgies of the Word where you can come and pray and receive ashes. Lent begins a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

A few weeks ago I was talking to some priest friends about the purpose of fasting. My friend said one year at the Easter Vigil he found his mind wandering to the delicious treat he would enjoy after the Mass finished. He caught himself, realizing that the point isn't to show you can abstain from something for forty days. Rather, the point is that in giving things up, we create more space for the Lord in our life. Maybe you've heard the old saying about the Israelites, "It took Israel three days to leave Egypt, but forty years for Egypt to leave Israel." Israel had to wander in the desert for forty years until their tendencies they had cultivated in Egypt had left them. Essentially, that is what is happening to us in the season of Lent. We give something up, we grow in prayer, we support the needy, all so that the Lord can increase in our lives.

Let's pray for each other this Lent that we will grow closer to the Lord and know of His deep love for us. Have a great week and as always, know of my prayers for each of you!

Reflexión sobre el significado y la finalidad de la Cuaresma

¡Feliz domingo!

Bueno, por fin ha llegado el Miércoles de Ceniza. Tenemos un calendario completo de Misas y Liturgias de la Palabra donde pueden venir a rezar y recibir las cenizas. La Cuaresma da comienzo a un tiempo de oración, ayuno y limosna.

Hace unas semanas estuve hablando con algunos amigos sacerdotes sobre el propósito del ayuno. Mi amigo dijo que hace un año, durante la Vigilia Pascual, se puso a pensar en el delicioso manjar que disfrutaría después de terminar la Misa. Se dio cuenta de que el objetivo no es demostrar que podemos abstenernos de algo durante cuarenta días. Más bien, el objetivo es que al renunciar a las cosas, creamos más espacio para el Señor en nuestra vida. Tal vez han oído el viejo dicho sobre los israelitas: "Israel tardó tres días en salir de Egipto, pero Egipto tardó cuarenta años en salir de Israel". Israel tuvo que vagar por el desierto durante cuarenta años hasta que abandonaron las tendencias que había cultivado en Egipto. Básicamente, eso es lo que nos está sucediendo en la temporada de Cuaresma. Renunciamos a algo, crecemos en la oración, apoyamos a los necesitados, todo para que el Señor pueda crecer en nuestras vidas.

Oremos unos por otros en esta Cuaresma para que nos acerquemos más al Señor y conozcamos su profundo amor por nosotros. ¡Que tengan una gran semana y, como siempre, sepan que rezo por cada uno de ustedes!
